December 05, (THEWILL) – A historic season for Italian club Napoli has been capped off with individual silverware for their star striker, Victor Osimhen, who was named the 2023 Player of the Year by the Italian Footballers’ Association (AIC), on Monday night. The prolific Nigerian was instrumental in leading Napoli to their first Serie A title in over three decades.
Still just 24 years old, Osimhen enjoyed a breakout year in the 2022/2023 league campaign, scoring an impressive 26 goals in 32 appearances. His consistent scoring form was a major factor behind Napoli securing the Scudetto with a comfortable 12 point margin at the top of the table.
Osimhen now joins elite company with the AIC award, which has previously recognised Italian legends like Roberto Baggio, Paolo Maldini and Francesco Totti. He is the first Nigerian to ever receive the honour. This caps off an ascendance to stardom over the last few seasons in Naples.
Despite battling injuries this term, Osimhen has continued putting the ball in the back of the net when fit, with six goals in his first 10 matches of the current 2023/2024 Serie A season. He seems primed to fight for the Capocannoniere award, as the league’s highest goal scorer this year.
As Napoli look to strengthen their domestic dominance, a lot of pressure will fall on their star forward Osimhen to continue leading the scoring charge. If this season’s AIC award is any indication, he is more than up to the task of spearheading success in Naples.
