July 06, (THEWILL) – Andy Murray’s illustrious Wimbledon career has come to a close after Emma Raducanu withdrew from their mixed doubles partnership. The 21-year-old Raducanu cited stiffness in her right wrist as the reason for her withdrawal, dashing hopes of a final appearance for Murray at the All England Club.

The pairing of Britain’s only Grand Slam singles champions since 1977, had been eagerly awaited by fans. Murray had already bowed out of the men’s singles and doubles competitions, making the mixed doubles his last chance to grace the Wimbledon courts. The three-time major winner, who underwent hip-resurfacing surgery in 2019, has hinted that 2024 may be his final year on tour.

Raducanu, currently ranked 135th in the world, expressed disappointment at the turn of events. “I’m disappointed as I was really looking forward to playing with Andy, however, I have to take care,” she stated via the Lawn Tennis Association’s social media account. Despite this setback, Raducanu’s singles campaign continues to flourish, having defeated ninth seed Maria Sakkari to reach the fourth round.

Murray had already received an emotional send-off on Thursday following his men’s doubles loss alongside brother Jamie. The 37-year-old Scotsman’s Wimbledon legacy includes two singles titles and his status as a national sporting icon. While his Wimbledon journey may be over, Murray has not ruled out a final Olympic appearance in Paris later this year.

Meanwhile, Raducanu’s focus now shifts to her singles match against New Zealand qualifier Lulu Sun as she aims to continue her impressive run at the Championships.
