August 30, (THEWILL) – On Monday, Andy Murray easily defeated Francisco Cerundolo, the 24th seed, to advance to the second round of the US Open. He displayed no signs of his recent cramping problems.

The 35-year-old entered the competition having only won one set on North American hard courts all season and having issues with chronic cramps, but this turned out to be a very simple contest in the humid weather.

The majority of Argentinean Cerundolo’s ranking points have come from victories on clay, so Murray had to work hard to win 7-5, 6-3, 6-3. The only real drawback was that he did not serve out all three sets.

Murray stated after the match, which was his first Grand Slam victory in straight sets since Wimbledon five years ago: “That felt like five sets to me. It’s very tricky conditions, very humid and hot. I was really happy with the way I got through that one, it was not easy.”
