MURIC Allegation False, Baseless – Sokoto Govt Denies Plot To Depose Sultan

June 25, (THEWILL) – The Sokoto State Government has described as false and baseless the allegation raised by Muslims Rights Concern (MURIC) that it planned to depose His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III.

MURIC had in a statement issued on Monday, by its Executive Director, Prof. Isiaq Akintola, alerted to a plot by Sokoto State Governor to remove Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar III.

Akintola, who recalled that Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto had previously deposed 15 traditional rulers for various offences, warned that if the Governor continues to undermine the Sultan’s position, Nigerian Muslims might be forced to take drastic measures.

However, in a statement on Tuesday, Abubakar Bawa, the Press Secretary to the Governor, said the Government has no plan whatsoever to depose the revered monarch.

Describing the allegation by MURIC as false and baseless, he said the law guiding the appointment and deposition of traditional rulers in the state had not been changed or even repelled.

Condemning campaigns “to smear the cordial relationship existing between the State Government and the Sultanate Council”, Bawa said the present administration, just like the previous administrations in the state, “cherishes and respects the Sultanate Council long before MURIC was established.

“The Sultanate Council, which has a long-standing historical importance, is so revered by all the people of Sokoto State, therefore, we still hold the institution in very high regard and esteem.

“To put the records straight, we would like to tell the world that the relationship between the Ahmed Aliyu-led administration and the Sultanate Council, under the leadership of our most respected monarch, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has been very cordial.

“Present administration always consulted with His Eminence, the Sultan on issues affecting the state, and his invaluable contributions and inputs are always respected and included in policy implementation.

“On the issue of sacking and transfer of some District Heads in Sokoto State, MURIC should know that the affected District Heads were accused of some unbecoming behaviours, such as land racketeering, aiding insecurity as well as insubordination to the constituted authority.

“In order to give them a fair hearing, the committee summoned all the affected District Heads, after which it came up with a whitepaper report, advising the government on what to do. And it was based on that and also in the public interest that the State Government acted in conformity with the recommendations made by the whitepaper committee.”
