September 04, (THEWILL) – Czech player, Karolina Muchova, ranked 52nd in the world, overcame an injury scare to defeat Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-1, 6-4 and reach the semi-finals of the 2024 US Open for the second consecutive year.

Muchova, who was making only her sixth tournament appearance since suffering a wrist injury at the 2023 US Open, made a dominant start to the match, racing to a 4-0 lead in the opening set. Although Haddad Maia, the 22nd seed, improved in the second set, Muchova was able to hold on to her advantage and seal victory in 85 minutes.

However, the win was not without its challenges for Muchova, who required medical treatment on multiple occasions during the second set. “I had little problems, I wouldn’t like to comment on it actually if it’s fine,” she said in her on-court interview. “But I’m happy I managed, to run to the bathroom and back.”

Haddad Maia also received medical attention late in the match. Despite the interruptions, Muchova was able to maintain her composure and take advantage of new balls in the final game to secure her victory with an ace on her first match point.

The 28-year-old, who has not dropped a set at this year’s US Open, will now face either world number one Iga Swiatek or American sixth seed Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals.
