May 23, (THEWILL)- Thiago Motta has announced his departure from Bologna, after opting against extending his deal with the Serie A club. The 41-year-old Italian led Bologna to a historic UEFA Champions League qualification in his second season.

Motta informed Bologna of his decision on Thursday morning, with the club releasing a statement thanking him for his “extraordinary work” and wishing him well for the future. Reports suggest the former midfielder is set to take over at Juventus, replacing the sacked Massimiliano Allegri.

Under Motta’s guidance, Bologna secured a third-place finish in Serie A this season, their highest-ever league position. His possession-based, attacking philosophy won over the fans initially sceptical of his September 2022 appointment after Sinisa Mihajlovic’s exit.

Motta’s first managerial stint at Genoa lasted just two months before a successful spell at Spezia, keeping them in the top flight. At Bologna, he transformed an inconsistent side that finished ninth in 2022/2023 into one of Italy’s most exciting teams this year.

The former Barcelona and Italy international seems set to take on a new challenge at Juventus. Bologna face Genoa on Friday’s final day, while Juve host Monza, with both teams still battling for UCL spots.
