April 2, (THEWILL)- Atletico Madrid halted their two-game losing streak in La Liga with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Villarreal, at Estadio de la Ceramica. The win extended their unbeaten run at the venue since 2018 and brought an end to the hosts’ nine-match unbeaten streak.
The visitors took the lead through Axel Witsel’s near-post flick from a Rodrigo Riquelme corner in the ninth minute. Villarreal equalised early in the second half through Alexander Sorloth’s low strike, his fifth goal in five league games.
Despite Villarreal’s increased confidence after the equaliser, with efforts from Etienne Capoue and Yerson Mosquera, Atletico remained a threat. Substitute Alvaro Morata’s flicked header bounced off the crossbar in the closing stages.
With three minutes remaining, Saul Niguez scored the winner for Atletico, rolling the ball beyond Filip Jorgensen after Cesar Azpilicueta’s lay-off. The victory propelled Diego Simeone’s side above Athletic Bilbao into the top four.
Villarreal have accrued 19 points from their last 10 games, a marked improvement from their first 20 matches. However, Atletico maintained their impressive form at Estadio de la Ceramica, securing a valuable three points.
