October 04, (THEWILL) – Alvaro Morata was the hero for Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, as his two goals helped the Spanish side overcome a spirited Feyenoord outfit 3-2 in the UEFA Champions League. Despite twice falling behind, Atletico showed resilience to claim the three points and move top of Group E.

The game was end-to-end from the off, with Feyenoord taking a surprise early lead through a Mario Hermoso own-goal. However, Morata restored parity soon after with a clever finish. The Dutch side went ahead again, thanks to David Hancko’s close-range strike, but Atletico equalised before the break, courtesy of Antoine Griezmann’s acrobatic effort.

After the interval, Morata popped up with the winner, steering home Nahuel Molina’s cross. Feyenoord came close to levelling late on but Atletico held firm to take maximum points in matchday two of the UCL.

The victory will come as a relief for Diego Simeone’s men after their agonising last-gasp draw to Lazio on matchday one. Morata and Griezmann proved the difference but Atletico had to show grit to battle back twice against spirited opposition.
