January 29, (THEWILL) – Monza secured a surprising 2-0 victory over Juventus in the Serie A on Sunday afternoon, at the Allianz Stadium.
This win marked Monza’s second league win over Juventus in their first season in the top-tier of Italian football. The victory also helped Monza to leapfrog Juventus in the league table, with the visitors now occupying a higher position in the upper half of the table.
The match began with Juventus, who were winless in their previous two Serie A games and had suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat at the hands of Napoli a fortnight ago, looking to turn things around. Despite the return of stars Paul Pogba and Dusan Vlahovic from injury, Juventus struggled to create meaningful chances in the first half.
Monza, on the other hand, scored twice, with goals from Patrick Ciurrria and Dany Mota, to give the visitors a comfortable lead at the break. The second half saw Juventus try to mount a comeback, but Monza’s goalkeeper, Michele Di Gregorio, was in top form and made a number of crucial saves to keep Juventus at bay.
Despite attempts from Angel Di Maria, Arkadiusz Milik, and Adrien Rabiot, the hosts were unable to find a breakthrough. Next week, Juventus will face Lazio in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals, while Monza will take on Sampdoria on February 6.
