April 13, (THEWILL) – Jan-Lennard Struff produced an upset in the Monte Carlo Masters round of 16 by defeating World No. 4, Casper Ruud, in straight sets.
Despite arriving in Monte Carlo fresh off the back of a title win at the Estoril Open, Ruud struggled in the windy conditions and couldn’t overcome the German player. Struff will now play fifth seed Andrey Rublev, in the quarter-finals, following the Russian’s victory over Karen Khachanov.
Jannik Sinner saved a match point to beat Hubert Hurkacz in a thrilling top-10 battle. The Italian player trailed Hurkacz by a set and a break and was down 5-6 in the second set tie-break but managed to battle back and win the match. Sinner will face either Novak Djokovic or Lorenzo Musetti in the next round.
In another match, Stefanos Tsitsipas eliminated Nicolas Jarry 6-3 6-4 and will be looking to extend his unbeaten run in Monte Carlo when he plays either Taylor Fritz or Jiri Lehecka in the quarter-final. Djokovic, Medvedev, and Zverev are also set to lock horns on Thursday afternoon.
