September 15, (THEWILL) – Paris Saint-Germain’s first defeat of the Ligue 1 season came at the hands of a relentless Nice side on Friday night, with a Terem Moffi brace.
Led by the mercurial Nigerian forward, Nice put in an impressive performance to end PSG’s unbeaten start and ring the end of manager Luis Enrique’s honeymoon period. The visitors showed why they have also been undefeated so far this campaign. Relentless pressing from Lucien Favre’s men caught PSG off guard on multiple occasions, with Gianluigi Donnarumma looking uncomfortable on the ball.
One passage of play led to the opening goal, as Moffi pounced on a blocked shot to sweep home from close range. PSG responded quickly through Kylian Mbappe. After Ousmane Dembele missed a one-on-one, Mbappe curled a lovely finish into the top corner from the edge of the box. However, Nice retook the lead after the break when Moffi squared for Andy Delort to tap in.
The Nigerian was a constant threat and added a second with a drilled finish after breezing past Danilo Pereira. Despite bringing on attacking reinforcements like Randal Kolo Muani, PSG struggled to break down Nice’s defence. While Mbappe pulled one back with a volleyed effort, Nice held firm to leapfrog the champions into second place.
This is far from an ideal result for PSG ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund next week. Next for Nice is away at Monaco on Friday, September 22.
