June 07, (THEWILL) – Negotiations between Major League Soccer and Inter Miami for the potential signing of Argentine superstar, Lionel Messi, are reportedly gaining traction.
There is rising optimism that Inter Miami could finalise a deal to bring Messi to the MLS as early as this summer. However, confidence in the agreement has been known to fluctuate regularly. Discussions suggest that Messi’s decision hinges between Inter Miami and Barcelona, with any move to a Saudi Arabian club not being seriously considered.
The MLS is making creative offers to entice Messi, including revenue-sharing arrangements with commercial partners. Apple has reportedly discussed offering Messi a share of the revenue generated by new subscribers to MLS Season Pass on Apple TV+. Meanwhile, Adidas, one of MLS’ major sponsors, is proposing a profit-sharing agreement tied to any increase in the company’s profits resulting from Messi’s involvement in the league.
Multiple sources monitored by THEWILL have differing opinions on the likelihood of Inter Miami securing the signing, with some classifying it as a 50-50 chance. Former Inter Miami coach, Phil Neville, waded into the fray, talking about the potential impact Messi’s arrival would have on the club and the league.
“This town wants to be turned on, you know what I mean? I think this club is far from working-class. It’s got to have a little bit of glitz and glamour. It’s gotta aim for the moon rather than the stars. That comes with the location that we’re in. The people of Miami want to be turned on. They want South Beach,” he said.
