September 13, (THEWILL) – Inter and AC Milan have rejected plans to modernise the San Siro stadium, Milan’s mayor, Giuseppe Sala, announced on Friday. The decision came after a meeting between club officials and the city administration.
Both clubs deemed the restructuring project, proposed by construction group, WeBuild, financially unsustainable. However, they expressed interest in reviving the initial plan for a new stadium near San Siro. Mayor Sala noted that while this was not a new concept, it faces opposition from local residents.
The iconic San Siro, officially named Giuseppe-Maezza stadium, was built in 1926 and has a capacity of 80,000. Despite its historical significance, the venue no longer meets the needs of the two clubs, who are seeking to boost their commercial revenue.
AC Milan has already purchased land in San Donato Milanese, south-east of the city, for a potential new stadium. Inter Milan is considering locations in Rozzano and Assago, just south of Milan, as well as a former industrial site in Sesto San Giovanni.
San Siro is set to host the opening ceremony of the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics and potentially the 2027 UEFA Champions League final. However, the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the stadium’s future may impact these plans, according to Italian press reports.
