September 10, (THEWILL) – Chelsea Legends cruised to a 4-0 victory over Bayern Munich Legends in a charity match held at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.
The match was organised in honour of former Blues player and manager, Gianluca Vialli, who sadly passed away in January, following a battle with cancer. Roberto Di Matteo, coaching the Chelsea side, selected a number of stars from the club’s 2012 UEFA Champions League winning team. Former Nigerian international, John Obi Mikel, started in midfield alongside ex-Blues, Michael Essien and Jody Morris.
Essien opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, steering in a cross from Ramires. Captain John Terry doubled the lead just three minutes later, tapping in a pass from Florent Malouda. Gary Cahill made it three for Chelsea just before the hour mark, nodding in from a Gianfranco Zola assist. Tiago Mendes secured the rout in injury time to round off a comfortable victory.

Obi, who played over 350 times for Chelsea between 2006 and 2017, helped orchestrate midfield as the London club secured a clean sheet. The charity match provided an opportunity to remember Gianluca Vialli’s contribution to the Blues. Proceeds from the event will go towards cancer charities.
Obi featured prominently for Nigeria during his playing career and won numerous honours during his time with Chelsea, including two Premier League titles
