August 24, (THEWILL) – Lionel Messi put on a virtuoso performance to lead Inter Miami to a dramatic comeback victory over FC Cincinnati in the semi-finals of the US Open Cup on Tuesday night.
Miami trailed 2-0 with just over 20 minutes remaining before Messi took over the game. The Argentine superstar delivered two pinpoint assists in the final quarter of the match to help Miami battle back and force extra time at 2-2. Messi first whipped in a free kick that was headed home by Leonardo Campana in the 68th minute. Then in stoppage time, Messi swung in another cross that Campana nodded in to tie the game.
In extra time, Miami took the lead through Josef Martinez before Cincinnati equalised to make it 3-3. The match went to penalties where Miami emerged victorious 5-4. 18-year-old Miami native, Luciano Acosta, scored the winning penalty kick.
It was a thrilling comeback for Miami, who are bottom of the MLS standings but have been revitalised since signing Messi last month. The Florida club have gone on an unbeaten run since adding Messi along with Spanish stars, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
Miami will now face the winner of the other semi-final between Houston Dynamo and Real Salt Lake in the final. They are one win away from capturing their second trophy of the summer after winning the Leagues Cup on Saturday.
