August 23, (THEWILL) – Arsenal are set to sign Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad for an initial fee of £28.4 million. The 28-year-old is travelling to London for a medical examination and to finalise the transfer details.
Merino has been left out of Real Sociedad’s squad for their upcoming La Liga match against Espanyol on Saturday. He said farewell to his teammates on Friday and is expected to sign a long-term contract with Arsenal, pending the completion of formalities.
The Spain international made 242 appearances for Real Sociedad over six seasons, scoring 27 goals. His achievements include winning the Copa del Rey in 2020 and reaching the UEFA Champions League last 16 in the 2023/2024 season. Merino also played a key role in Spain’s Euro 2024 victory, featuring in all seven matches of the tournament.
This transfer will make Merino Arsenal’s third signing of the summer. The Gunners have already made David Raya’s loan move from Brentford permanent and brought in defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna.
Merino brings significant international experience to the Emirates Stadium, having earned 28 caps for Spain. His addition to the squad is likely to improve Arsenal’s midfield depth as they compete in domestic and European competitions. Arsenal’s next fixture is against Aston Villa on Saturday.
