June 03, (THEWILL) – Former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev’s struggles on clay continued as he was eliminated from the French Open in the fourth round on Monday. The Russian fifth seed suffered a 4-6 6-2 6-1 6-3 loss to Alex de Minaur of Australia at Roland Garros.

Medvedev, a six-time Grand Slam finalist, could not sustain his strong start after taking the opening set. The 28-year-old has now failed to advance past the quarterfinals in Paris, with his best result coming in 2021. He has also lost in the first round on five of his eight appearances at the clay court major.

In contrast, De Minaur had never progressed beyond the second round at the French Open before this year, winning just three of his previous 10 matches. However, the 25-year-old has shown improved form on clay in 2024, reaching his first Masters quarter-final on the surface in Monte Carlo.

De Minaur will face either Alexander Zverev or Holger Rune in the quarter-finals, his second Grand Slam quarter-final appearance after the 2020 US Open. Medvedev’s disappointing French Open campaign adds to his clay court crisis, with his lack of success on the surface persisting.
