July 09, (THEWILL) – Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev won against world number one Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon quarter-finals on Tuesday. The match lasted five sets and took four hours to complete.
Medvedev, seeded fifth in the tournament, won 6-7(7) 6-4 7-6(4) 2-6 6-3. This win puts him in the Wimbledon semi-finals for the second year in a row. It also ended his losing streak against Sinner, which had lasted for five matches.
The match had many changes in momentum. Sinner won the first set in a tie-break. However, he began to make more mistakes in the second set. He also needed medical help early in the third set because he seemed unwell.
Sinner fought back to win the fourth set, but Medvedev got an early lead in the final set. He held onto this lead to win the match. Medvedev will next play either Carlos Alcaraz or Tommy Paul in the semi-final.
This win was important for Medvedev. It helped him get back at Sinner for his loss in the Australian Open final earlier this year. In that match, Medvedev had been two sets ahead but still lost.
