May 09, (THEWILL) – The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced investigation into a serious incident involving a B737-400 with Nationality and Registration Marks 5N-MBD operated by Max Air, which occurred around 14:57 (Local Time) on May 6, 2023.

The aircraft, with 144 passengers and six crew members onboard was en-route Abuja from Yola when it had a burst tyre on landing on the runway of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, Nigeria.

Safety responders arrived at the accident site and evacuated the passengers. There was no injury or fatality.

“The NSIB, hereby, solicit information from the general public in form of pictures, video or recording evidence to help assist in conducting a comprehensive investigation.

“The Bureau can be reached through [email protected] and NSIB_Nigeria on its social media platforms. The Bureau can also be reached on its emergency line +234-807-709-0909,” the air investigation agency said in a statement.

The NSIB is a multimodal investigation agency charged with the mandate to investigate transportation accidents and serious incidents in Nigeria with the aim of identifying the probable causes and proffer safety recommendations that can prevent reoccurrence.

The incident sparked concerns among aviation stakeholders who warned against such development at this time of the nation’s transition to a new federal government.

THEWILL had reported that the Max Air had emergency landing as the tyre reportedly burst into flames at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja..

However, the aircraft crash-landed in Abuja with emergency officials already on ground to put off the fire before the passengers disembarked right at the runway.
