Many Thought I’d Run Mad After My Wife Left Me – Femi Kuti

June 27, (THEWILL) – Legendary singer, Femi Kuti, first son of Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has revealed that some people wished and felt that he would run mad after his first wife, Funke Kuti, left him.

Femi and Funke Kuti ended their marriage with a divorce suit in 2012, but they have remained friends and have been co-parenting their son, Made Kuti, together.

In an interview with media personality, Chude Jideonwo, the singer spoke about his marriage to Funke and the crisis which rocked his family when his marriage crashed.

According to him, some people predicted that 12 of his family members would die shortly after he lost his father.

His sister, Shola, and a cousin died at a stretch shortly after the legendary singer passed on.
He said that period was particularly challenging for him because many were urging him to be strong, being the first son of the family.

He added that they thought he would run mad after his wife, Funke, dumped him in the middle of the crisis.

“Fela had just died. My sister, Shola, had gone. My cousin had gone. Some people were predicting that 12 of us would die. And I was asking ‘is this prediction going to come true’?

“We had our internal family problems. They would say, ‘You know, you are the first son; you must do this.’ And I would say, ‘Who born me inside this wahala like this?’.

“Then my wife got separated from me and they said, ‘Femi is going mad.’ It was terrible.”

He, however, said he is thankful for the experience, adding that it made him who he is today.
