Mane Now A Major Doubt For World Cup After Injuring Right Fibula

November 09, (THEWILL) – Sadio Mane hurt his leg while playing for Bayern Munich on Tuesday, putting his participation at the Qatar FIFA 2022 World Cup in doubt.

With an injury “to the head of his right fibula,” the 30-year-old was forced to leave Bayern’s 6-1 victory over Werder Bremen after 20 minutes of play and the club has confirmed that he will not be playing against Schalke on Saturday.

The injury comes barely 13 days before Senegal’s opening World Cup match against the Netherlands and a club statement on Wednesday read: “Further examinations will follow in the coming days. FC Bayern is also in contact with the medical staff of the Senegalese Football Association.”

On Friday, Aliou Cisse, the head coach of Senegal, is expected to reveal his World Cup roster. The reigning African Champions will play the Netherlands in their opening Group A match on November 21 before facing the hosts, Qatar, and Ecuador.

Mane, a two-time African Footballer of the Year, is a key player for Senegal. In the penalty shootout victory over Egypt earlier this year, Mane, Senegal’s all-time leading scorer, scored the decisive goal to give Senegal their first Africa Cup of Nations victory.
