December 06, (THEWILL) – The Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF), together with the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts Culture and Recreation (SACR), will host the 10th annual Mandela Remembrance Walk and Run (MRWR), this Sunday in Tshwane. The event commemorates 10 years since former South African President Nelson Mandela’s passing and celebrates his legacy.
Over the years, the MRWR has attracted hundreds of thousands of participants honouring Mandela’s legacy of fighting for human dignity, equality and a just society in South Africa. This year’s 5K walk/run and 10K and 21K runs start at the Union Buildings, at 6:30 in the morning, passing historical sites linked to Mandela’s life.
Online entries are open at www.mandelawalkandrun.com, for R100-R200 based on event distance. Entry fees support the NMF’s work promoting solutions to societal challenges. Commemorative event shirts and bags will be provided to the first 5,000 entrants.
NMF Acting CEO, Professor Verne Harris, said: “This year marks 10 years since Mandela’s passing. The event allows us to celebrate his massive contribution and impact on all our lives.” Government and corporate partners like; Unilever and Mahindra also back the event.
While attracting casual participants, world-class runners, like; Gerda Steyn and Stephen Mokoka, regularly join the nation-building event. A private wreath-laying ceremony at the Union Buildings will mark the 10th anniversary events.
