June 23, (THEWILL) – Manchester United have made a renewed bid for Chelsea and England midfielder, Mason Mount, with the offer reaching up to £55 million.
The initial bid of £50 million, consisting of a £45 million base fee and £5 million in add-ons, was rejected by Chelsea, who countered with a request for £60 million and £7 million in add-ons. However, United remain determined to secure the services of Mount and have returned with an improved offer of £50 million upfront, with an additional £5 million in variable payments.
Although Mount has one year remaining on his contract with Chelsea, negotiations to extend his stay have been unsuccessful. Chelsea are now open to accommodating the player’s desire for a potential exit. The club values Mount significantly higher than United’s previous £40 million offer, which was swiftly dismissed. As a product of Chelsea’s Academy, Mount has made 195 appearances for the club since his debut in 2017, scoring 33 goals.
He has also represented England on 36 occasions and was part of the squads for Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup. United’s pursuit of Mount aims to fill the void left by Christian Eriksen, potentially offering a seamless transition in terms of progressive passing, set-piece delivery, and late entries into the box. Mount’s defensive intensity could also improve United’s overall performance without the ball.
While being better than Eriksen or United’s other box-to-box midfielders may meet the immediate objective, the club must consider if this benchmark aligns with their long-term aspirations.
