February 22, (THEWILL) – Manchester United currently have no plans to sign interim manager, Ralf Rangnick, on a permanent basis for next season. Instead the German will switch to the position of a consultant as planned.
THEWILL recalls that Rangnick was appointed as temporary manager in December on a short-term contract to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who had been fired the previous month after a spate of dismal results.
It was clear from the start that the 63-year-old would lead the squad until the end of the season before moving on to a new post advising on football operations until 2024. However, his performance and some results led to rumours that he may instead stay on as manager to continue to make improvements to the side.
Rangnick has led United to 25 points from a possible 36 since December 5, compared to 17 points from a possible 36 under Solskjaer until November 20.
Despite having a good influence in challenging conditions, reports from the Old Trafford club indicate that the initial plan has remained unchanged. He is not on the club’s shortlist for a new manager and will instead take up the aforementioned consulting post as planned.
United chose to hire an interim manager to give them more time and freedom while they look for a permanent replacement, though they considered moving to the latter stage sooner if one of their favourite candidates became available.
Mauricio Pochettino and Brendan Rodgers have long been the frontrunners, with Ajax coach Erik ten Hag becoming more prominent in recent months.
Rangnick may be allowed to contribute to United’s search for his successor before switching to his substantive job of consulting. The German is renowned for overseeing growth and structure at Red Bull clubs and that is an aspect of the organisation at Old Trafford that he can impact positively.
