May 19, (THEWILL) – Manchester United has officially announced that Phil Jones will bid farewell to the club at the conclusion of the 2023/2024 season.
After a tumultuous 12-year tenure at Old Trafford, the centre-back will part ways with the club as his current contract expires. In an interview with club channels, Jones expressed the challenges he faced in recent years.
“It’s been very difficult, the last couple of years. There’s no denying that,” he said. “There is no hiding away from that. My family have been absolutely instrumental in keeping me on the straight and narrow and keeping me focused to try to get fit and try to play more.”
Jones, now 31, reminisced about his love for the game and the setbacks he endured, saying: “I’ve missed playing football. You grow up playing football and all you want to do is play football. It’s all I’ve known; from such a young age, it’s to do what you love doing for a living. I’ve been fortunate enough to do that, albeit not as much as I would have liked.”
During his time at Manchester United, Jones lifted five trophies, including one Premier League title, one FA Cup, one Europa League, and two Community Shields, amassing 229 appearances for the Red Devils. He also represented England 27 times, participating in three major tournaments, including the 2018 World Cup.
