January 19, (THEWILL) – Manchester City has maintained its position at the top of the latest Deloitte Football Money League, which ranks clubs based on their revenue generated during the 2021/2022 season. The rankings demonstrate the financial dominance of the English Premier League, with 11 English teams making the list, compared to only 9 from the rest of Europe.

City, who also retained the EPL title in 2021/22, generated a revenue of nearly £620m for the season. This was higher than the £604.5m earned by Real Madrid, who came in second place. Liverpool also experienced a significant increase, rising four places from their 2020/21 ranking and surpassing rivals Manchester United for the first time in the 26-year history of the Deloitte Football Money League. The Merseysiders’ 22% revenue increase can be attributed to reaching the Champions League final and growth in matchday revenue at an expanded capacity Anfield.

However, Bayern Munich and Barcelona saw only slight increases in revenue and fell three places out of the top five to sixth and seventh place respectively. Chelsea (£481m), Tottenham (£443m) and Arsenal (£367m) rounded out the top 10.

The true economic strength of the EPL is highlighted by the presence of clubs such as West Ham, Leicester, Leeds, Everton, and Newcastle in the list. West Ham, in particular, generated more revenue than seven-time European champions AC Milan, who won the Serie A title in May. Broadcasting played a major role in this, as the EPL remains the preferred choice of international markets and the value of media rights increased during the most recent sales process – the only one of Europe’s top five leagues to do so.
