May 31, (THEWILL) – Chelsea have given Manchester City the green light to commence discussions with midfielder, Mateo Kovacic, regarding a potential move in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The 29-year-old has garnered interest from other top clubs even outside the Premiership such as Bayern Munich. However, the former Real Madrid player has previously expressed a desire to join the reigning English Premier League champions, Manchester City.
Initial talks between the two clubs have commenced, with City informing Chelsea of their interest in Kovacic. The financial details of the potential transfer are yet to be explored. Kovacic’s current contract at Stamford Bridge is set to expire after the upcoming season, adding further impetus to the negotiations.
Since joining Chelsea on an initial loan deal from Real Madrid in August 2018, Kovacic has made a significant impact, featuring in 221 matches for the club. The move was made permanent approximately a year later, with Chelsea reportedly paying around £45 million for his services. Notably, Chelsea recently appointed Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager after a disappointing 12th-place finish this season.
Meanwhile, Man City is still aiming to secure an impressive treble this season. Pep Guardiola’s team is set to face city rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup final this Saturday, followed by a showdown against Inter Milan in the highly anticipated UEFA Champions League final on June 10.
