September 16, (THEWILL) – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated that his administration is fully committed to supporting the rehabilitation efforts of the Borno State government, following the devastating floodwater that ravaged Maiduguri last week.

Tinubu, upon his arrival on Monday, went straight to the temporary displaced camp at Government College, Maiduguri, where he offered sympathised messages to the Borno State government and residents affected by the Alau Dam collapse.

It was reported that 37 people have been confirmed dead and more than 200,000 people are currently taking refuge in 36 camps in the state capital. The flooding had caused a catastrophic impact on the economy and widespread property damage.

Tinubu emphatically explained that his visit aims to demonstrate solidarity with the affected communities. He visited one of the newly established relief camps, where he interacted directly with displaced persons (IDPs), affected by the flooding.

“I just came to associate myself with you, we will continue to pray for you and I want to assure you; that we are going to support you, we will support you. God bless you”, Tinubu assured.

He then proceeded to pay a courtesy call to the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Umar-Garbai El-Kaneni and he mentioned that he altered his travel plans, which initially had him heading straight to America from the UK, to personally express his condolences to the Shehu of Borno and the people of Borno.

In response to the crisis, the Borno State government has established 36 relief camps to provide shelter and support to the thousands affected.

Zulum believes that Tinubu’s assessment of the situation would avail him firsthand information and provide additional support to alleviate the suffering of the flood victims.

Tinubu was accompanied by the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Chairman, Nigerian Governors Forum, Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, Sokoto State and his counterparts in Bauchi and Kogi State respectively.

THEWILL recalls that the president had dispatched his vice, Kashim Shettima, who came on Tuesday, to assess the situation and announce the federal government’s donation of N3 billion.
