September 17, (THEWILL) – Fiorentina mounted a superb second-half comeback to beat Atalanta 3-2, despite a previous leveller by Ademola Lookman, in an entertaining Serie A clash at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday evening.
Atalanta were quickly out of the blocks as Teun Koopmeiners clinically finished past Pietro Terracciano from the edge of the box to give the visitors an early lead. However, Fiorentina grew into the game and equalised courtesy of a superb Giacomo Bonaventura volley, before Lucas Martinez Quarta headed home on the stroke of half time to complete the turnaround.
The visitors restored parity early in the second half as Lookman breezed past the Fiorentina defence to fire home his first goal of the season. With both sides going in search of a winner, the game remained on a knife edge.
As the match entered its closing stages, substitute Cristian Kouame poked home from close range to secure all three points for Fiorentina. The late winner sparked jubilant scenes among the home supporters after a superb comeback performance.
The victory ends a poor run of form for Fiorentina after their heavy 4-0 defeat at Inter before the international break. They next face Genk in the Europa Conference League on Thursday. Meanwhile, Atalanta suffer consecutive losses leaving them with work to do ahead of their upcoming UEFA Europa League campaign where they begin against Rakow Czestochowa on Thursday.
