Liverpool Whip Bournemouth 9-Nil In First Win Of New Season

August 28, (THEWILL) – Liverpool defeated a miserable Bournemouth side 9-0 at Anfield on Saturday, to earn their first victory of the season and equal the English Premier League record for goals scored in one win.

Following a 2-1 loss to Manchester United on Monday, questions about Jurgen Klopp’s team’s injury-ravaged roster were raised heading into the encounter. But Scott Parker’s team provided a platform for redemption as the Reds scored five goals in the first half of amazing football.

Before Harvey Elliott scored his first Premier League goal, Luis Diaz had planted a beautiful header to start the scoring. Trent Alexander-Arnold responded to those who criticised his performance at Old Trafford with a fantastic goal of his own.

Then Roberto Firmino scored to add to a first half that saw him provide three assists and Virgil van Dijk added a fifth goal with a header. Following the break, Chris Mepham’s own goal extended the rout, and Firmino and Diaz each doubled their tallies to equal the EPL record.

Liverpool cannot afford to savour their amazing blitzkrieg too long because they have Newcastle at home next before taking on the Merseyside derby and beginning their Champions League campaign in Naples. In the meanwhile, Bournemouth will play Wolves at home on Wednesday in an effort to shake off this humiliation.
