October 05, (THEWILL) – Hoodlums suspected to be political thugs, on Saturday, attacked and set ablaze the office complex of the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area.
The incident comes amid accusations of alleged hijack of electoral materials by agents of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the ongoing local government elections across the 31 councils in the state.
Opposition political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), Young Peoples Party (YPP), and Labour Party (LP), among others, accused AKISIEC of compromising the exercise in favour of the PDP.
Angered by the development, the hoodlums attacked the AKISIEC office in Ibiono Ibom LGA and set the building ablaze.
Spokesperson of the State Police Command, ASP Timfon John, said part of the building was razed.
“Some hoodlums partly touched the AKISIEC office in Ibiono Ibom but election materials remained intact, the election is also ongoing,” she said, adding that the command had reinforced security at all the AKISIEC offices and strategic locations in the state.
