January 18, (THEWILL) – In the Best FIFA Men’s Player award for 2021, Robert Lewandowski defeated Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah. Following another outstanding season, the Bayern Munich star has won the trophy for the second consecutive time.

In the 2020/21 Bundesliga season, Lewandowski eclipsed Gerd Muller’s record for most goals in a season, scoring 41 goals in 29 games and 43 goals in a calendar year.

“Thank you very much,” Lewandowski said at FIFA’s virtual ceremony. “I am very humbled to win this trophy. I feel very proud, I feel happiness because this also belongs to my teammates and to my coaches and we work hard to win games and trophies. It makes me feel special to work with these guys around me.”

Lewnadowski also paid tribute to the late Muller, adding: “Everything that’s happened last year with that record, I never even dreamed about Gerd’s record to break. If you asked me a few years ago if it was possible to break that record, I’d have said no, it’s impossible to score so many goals in the Bundesliga.

“Without him it would have been impossible. He broke so many records.”

So far this season, the Pole has 34 goals in 27 games, including nine in the Champions League group stage.
