September 12, (THEWILL) – Frank Lampard is being considered as a top candidate for the vacant managerial position at Olympique Lyonnais.
The former Chelsea boss has been out of work since January, and has emerged as a frontrunner to take over at Lyon, after they mutually parted ways with previous manager, Laurent Blanc, earlier this week. Lampard has caught the eye of Lyon president, John Textor, who is said to highly respect the former England international even after his uninspiring managerial second spell with Chelsea and links to Textor’s other club, Crystal Palace.
However, while Lampard appears to be the frontrunner for the Lyon job, he is not the only name in the mix. Reports monitored by THEWILL indicate that former AC Milan player, Gennaro Gattuso, is also on the club’s shortlist to potentially replace Blanc. Gattuso recently left his role as Valencia manager after just half a season in charge.
Lyon now find themselves bottom of Ligue 1 after a poor start to the campaign. The managerial vacancy needs to be filled quickly if the club hopes to turn their fortunes around this season. Lampard looks to be the preferred choice, but faces competition from Gattuso as the search continues.
Whoever does take over in the Lyon hotseat faces a big challenge to lift the club from its current predicament. Lampard’s previous English Premier League experience and the admiration of the club’s management could make him the ideal candidate to spearhead a revival.
