July 23, (THEWILL) – The Labour Party (LP) lawmaker representing Imo East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Sen. Ezenwa Francis Onyewuchi, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Declaring his support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration in his letter of defection read on the floor of the Red Chamber on Tuesday, by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, the lawmaker anchored his letter on Section 68(1g) of the constitution.
In his defection letter, Onyewuchi cited the crisis within the LP as the reason for his defection.
The letter reads in part: “This decision is due to the intractable division and crisis in the Labour Party that sponsored the earlier election into the Nigerian Senate.
“The communication is therefore made under Section 68(1g) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended.
“Imo State and the entirety of the south-east remain united under the leadership of our performing governor, his excellency, Hope Uzodimma.”
After the letter was read, Ezenwa was welcomed by APC lawmakers and was escorted to his new seat in the APC section of the Senate Chamber.
In a related development, the lawmaker, representing Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency of Kogi State in the House of Representatives, Salman Idris, has defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the APC.
Idris officially announced his defection in a letter read on the floor of the House on Tuesday, by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen.
