July 11, (THEWILL) – Czech tennis player, Barbora Krejcikova, has made it to the Wimbledon final after a hard-fought victory over former champion, Elena Rybakina. The 31st seed won 3-6 6-3 6-4 in a match that lasted two hours and seven minutes on Centre Court.
Krejcikova will face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the final on Saturday. This will be Krejcikova’s second Grand Slam final, following her French Open win in 2021. The Czech player showed great determination, coming back from a set down to win the match.
The 28-year-old had a strong start to 2024, reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. However, she faced challenges in the months leading up to Wimbledon, winning only three singles matches in five months due to back injury and illness.
Krejcikova’s run to the final has been impressive. She beat 11th seed Danielle Collins in the fourth round and former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in the quarter-finals. Her victory over Rybakina, who had been in top form, was particularly noteworthy.
In the other semi-final, Paolini defeated Croatian Donna Vekic in a marathon match that ended 2-6 6-4 7-6(8). This was the longest women’s semi-final in Wimbledon history.
