August 16, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich began their 2024/2025 campaign with a convincing 4-0 victory over Ulm in the German Cup on Friday. The match marked Vincent Kompany’s competitive debut as Bayern’s manager.

Thomas Mueller, the 34-year-old Bayern veteran, opened the scoring in the 12th minute by tapping in a pass from Joshua Kimmich. He doubled the lead shortly after, finishing a cross from Serge Gnabry.

Late in the second half, Kingsley Coman and Harry Kane added to the scoreline, with Kane netting his first German Cup goal. Bayern, who have won the German Cup 20 times, will aim to progress further in the competition this season.

They have not advanced beyond the quarter-finals since their treble-winning 2019/2020 season. The club hired Kompany after failing to win any trophies in the previous season, their first trophyless year since 2012.

Ulm, Bayern’s opponents, were promoted to the second division this summer for the first time in 23 years. The match against Bayern was their first competitive fixture of the new German football season.
