July 07, (THEWILL) – Kenyan runner, Faith Kipyegon, set a new world record in the women’s 1500m at the Paris Diamond League meet on Sunday.
She clocked three minutes 49.04 seconds, beating her own previous record by 0.07 seconds. This performance comes just weeks before the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Kipyegon will aim to defend her title.
The 30-year-old athlete led from the start, guided by two pacemakers. Her strong run at Stade Charlety improved upon her previous best time set in Florence in June 2023. Kipyegon, already a two-time Olympic 1500m champion with three world titles, looks to be in top form for the upcoming Games.
Australian Jessica Hull finished second with an Oceania record of 3:50.83, while Britain’s Laura Muir took third place with a national record of 3:53.79. The top eight athletes all achieved personal bests in the race, highlighting the high level of competition.
Kipyegon expressed her happiness with the result, stating: “It feels amazing to break the world record. I am in the right direction towards the Paris Olympics.” She also confirmed her plans to compete in both the 1500m and 5000m events at the Games, aiming for a double victory.
The record-breaking performance in Paris suggests that the women’s 1500m event at the 2024 Olympics could be highly competitive. With Kipyegon in peak form and her rivals also showing improvement, fans can expect an exciting race when the Games begin later this summer.
