August 30, (THEWILL) – The Super Eagles camp is already buzzing ahead of the international matches of Nigeria’s Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign, with the first leg scheduled for Friday, September 3 against the Lone Stars of Liberia in Nigeria.
Of the invited squad of players, four foreign-based members of the Super Eagles team and one from the domestic league have arrived in the camp on Sunday evening and they were settling down to the business of commencing the preparations necessary for the World Cup next year.
The Leicester City’s pair of forward Kelechi Iheanacho and midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, were joined by Everton’s forward and winger Alex Iwobi, Kaizer Chiefs’ goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi and Abia Warriors’ defender Adekunle Adeleke as early arrivals.
Monday should see the camp increase with more arrivals expected as training is set to start on Tuesday for the 30-man squad that the Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr invited for the world cup qualifiers.
At the Teslim Balogun Stadium on September 3, the three-time African champions will play Liberia before a trip to Cape Verde for the second qualifying match against the Blue Sharks at the Estádio Nacional de Cabo Verde four days later.
As THEWILL reported, Rohr will have a full squad to train for and play in the clash against Liberia, but due to the UK red list that precludes travel to countries where COVID-19 remains prevalent, Nigeria will be without seven UK players for the match against the Blue Sharks in Praia as Cape Verde is on the list.
This led to an exasperated Rohr, who was not happy that the UK failed to allow for exceptions after it granted exceptions for the Euro 2020 continental competition, to name seven extra players to replace the UK contingent in the squad for the clash against Cape Verde.
