July 18, (THEWILL) – The Kano State Government has said that commercial tricycles will no longer operate in Kano Metropolis between 10 pm and 6.am, with effect from Thursday, July 20, 2022.

A statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, said the decision to restrict the operations of commercial tricycles, known locally as ‘Daidata Sahu’, was part of the outcome of a meeting of the State Security Council.

Garba said the measure was part of the government’s effort to ensure the security of lives and property in the state.

Tricycles account for 95 percent of transportation in the State, but it was recently fingered in some rising crime in the metropolis.

In the statement, the commissioner urged commercial tricycle operators to comply with the order and stop operating at the stipulated time, saying that security agents would enforce the ban without compromise.

The state government had earlier banned the activities of Okada riders within the metropolis due to their tendency to be used in crimes and other anti-social activities.

The ban on Okada activites follows such incidents as the Boko Haram attack in 2010 in Kano, which led to the death of several people including Akwu Enenche a Cameraman with the Channels Television.

Commercial motorcycles were also used in the attack on the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Abdullahi Ado Bayero, he never recovered from the attack unril his death a few years later.
