October 17, (THEWILL) – Juventus midfielder, Nicolo Fagioli, has been banned from football for seven months for breaching betting regulations. The 22-year-old admitted betting on matches and agreed to attend therapy and speak publicly about his gambling addiction in exchange for a reduction of a standard 12-month ban.

Fagioli was fined €12,500 as part of the agreement with the FIGC, which prohibits players from betting on football events. The ban means he will miss most of the 2023/2024 Serie A season, only returning for Juventus’ final two games against Bologna and Monza.

The midfielder was the first of three players to be named in a Turin prosecutors’ investigation into illegal betting websites. Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali and Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo are also under investigation, with their punishments yet to be confirmed.

Article 24 of the FIGC’s Sporting Justice Code sets a minimum three-year ban for players found gambling on football. However, Fagioli’s quick admission of guilt and cooperation with authorities led to his reduced seven-month ban.

It is a major setback for the talented Fagioli, one of Juventus’ most promising young players. He has featured in six of their eight Serie A games this term and made his Italy debut last November. Juventus face League leaders AC Milan on Sunday in their next league fixture.
