October 19, (THEWILL) – Juventus have thrown their support behind midfielder, Nicolo Fagioli, after he was handed a seven-month ban from football for breaching betting regulations, as the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced this week. The club said in a statement they will provide the necessary support during his rehabilitation.
The 22-year-old was also fined €12,500 as part of the punishment. Fagioli will serve 5 months of the ban immediately, while the remaining 2 months are suspended. As part of the ruling, he has agreed to undergo at least 6 months of therapy to address gambling issues.
The ban comes after Fagioli was named as one of several players being investigated by authorities in connection with an Italian football betting probe. Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo of Aston Villa, currently on loan at Galatasaray, are also said to be under investigation.
Tonali and Zaniolo were both withdrawn from Italy’s recent training camp and matches. Fagioli, who has 1 senior cap for Italy, was not part of the national team squad during the ongoing international break.
Authorities have not revealed specifics of Fagioli’s betting infringements. But the lengthy ban indicates the FIGC views it as a serious matter. With Juventus’ backing, the midfielder will now focus on serving his suspension and addressing the root causes of his gambling issues.
