Juve Open Talks With Man City’s Phillips, Other Targets To Bolster Midfield

December 19, (THEWILL) – Italian giants, Juventus, have reportedly held talks with English Premier League champions, Manchester City, regarding England international midfielder, Kalvin Phillips. The 26-year-old has struggled for regular game time since joining City from Leeds United last summer.

It is understood that City are open to allowing Phillips to depart in January, either permanently or on loan. The midfielder hoped to convince Pep Guardiola of his abilities by Christmas, but opportunities have remained limited. As a result, he is now ready to seek more minutes elsewhere.

Juventus have long maintained an interest in signing Phillips. They are said to be in the market for a midfield addition in the winter transfer window. Initial discussions with City explored a loan deal for Phillips with an obligation to buy. However, the Italian club may be reluctant to commit to a significant permanent fee given Phillips’ reported £40 million valuation and salary.

Financial restrictions could impact Juventus’ spending plans. Yet, suspended salaries for players like Paul Pogba may provide some flexibility under financial fair play regulations. Sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli is concurrently scouting alternatives like Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and players from Atalanta, Monaco and Freiburg.

A move in January currently remains uncertain as options are weighed up. Still, Kalvin Phillips’ search for regular football leaves the door open for interested suitors like Juventus to further pursue a deal.
