December 10, (THEWILL) – Joao Cancelo’s current contract with Manchester City does not expire until the summer of 2025. However, the club could offer him a new one in the following months.
Cancelo has established himself as one of the best full-backs in the world, whether he is playing on the right or the left. Now, in his third year at City, and despite a difficult debut season that was cut short by the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the player continues to shine.
The Portuguese international has been hailed as one of the best performers in the Premier League in 2021/2022, and City are expected to extend his contract.
Talks on a new contract are set to begin in the coming months. Cancelo’s rising stature in the City squad would be reflected in new and enhanced terms.
The defender was signed from Juventus for about £60 million in 2019, with City paying over £27 million in cash and sending Danilo to Turin as part of the deal. In his first season, he only started 13 Premier League games and was more frequently employed in the Champions League.
The 27-year-old made his breakthrough last season, as his versatility helped City win the Premier League title, starting 27 league games and another 12 in various tournaments.
Cancelo has been an unstoppable force for Pep Guardiola’s side this season, starting every Premier League game and playing more minutes than any other City player.
