August 23, (THEWILL) – Tunisian tennis star, Ons Jabeur, has withdrawn from the 2024 US Open due to a shoulder injury, tournament officials announced on Thursday. The world number 17, who finished as runner-up to Swiatek in the 2022 final, will not compete in this year’s Grand Slam event in New York.

Jabeur, formerly ranked world number two, had previously opted out of the Olympics to focus on her fitness. However, her efforts to recover were not successful, leading to her withdrawal from the Washington WTA tournament at the start of the US Open hard court season.

The Tunisian player’s recent performances have been impacted by her injury. She suffered a first-round defeat to Naomi Osaka in Toronto and subsequently pulled out of the Cincinnati Open last week, further indicating her struggle with fitness.

Following Jabeur’s withdrawal, her spot in the US Open draw will be filled by Belgian player Elise Mertens. Mertens’ vacated position will then be allocated to a qualifier, reshuffling the tournament lineup.

Jabeur’s absence from the US Open marks a significant setback for the player, who has been a strong contender in recent years.
