Italian Football Federation Backs Spalletti Despite Early Euro Exit

July 01, (THEWILL) – The Italian Football Federation has confirmed that Luciano Spalletti will continue as Italy’s head coach, despite the team’s disappointing performance at Euro 2024. Italy, the reigning European champions, were eliminated in the last 16 stage after a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in Berlin.
Federation chief Gabriele Gravina emphasized the importance of maintaining continuity in their long-term project. “It’s impossible to resolve problems by abandoning a long-term project or by giving up on the coach and players who have been with us in this project,” Gravina stated. He added that Spalletti retains their full confidence as they look ahead to the Nations League, which begins in just 60 days.
Spalletti, who took over from Roberto Mancini last summer, faced criticism for his tactical decisions and team selections throughout the tournament. The 65-year-old coach acknowledged his shortcomings, saying: “Obviously not, because if so, I would be talking about something different,” when asked if he had brought his best to the role.
The Azzurri’s early exit from Euro 2024 marks a significant setback for Italian football, coming just three years after their triumph at Euro 2020. Spalletti, who arrived in the national team setup with high expectations following his Serie A success with Napoli, now faces the challenge of rebuilding the squad and restoring confidence.
Italy’s next major test will come on September 6 when they face France in Paris to kick off their Nations League campaign. The team will also compete against Belgium and Israel in Group A2, providing Spalletti with an opportunity to implement changes and improve results in the coming months.
