November 04, (THEWILL) – Inter Milan secured a vital 2-1 away victory against Atalanta on Saturday, despite a late fightback from the home side. The match at Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo saw the visitors take a 40th minute through a Hakan Calhanoglu penalty before Lautaro Martinez struck a sensational second goal.
Atalanta rallied in the closing stages and pulled one back courtesy of a Gianluca Scamacca tap-in. However, the 10 men of Atalanta could not find an equaliser, as Inter held on for three precious points.
The first half was a cagey affair, with both sides having chances before Inter won a penalty just before the break. Calhanoglu slotted home expertly from the spot to give Inter the advantage. The Nerazzurri controlled proceedings after the interval and Martinez doubled their lead with a curling effort into the top corner from an Ademola Lookman assist.
Scamacca’s goal set up a tense finish, but Atalanta were reduced to 10 men when Rafael Toloi was sent off for a second yellow card. The home side applied late pressure but Inter stood firm to claim the victory.
The win sees Inter strengthen their position at the top of the Serie A summit as they look to keep on their contention for the league title this season. Atalanta remain in fifth despite the loss on home turf.
