June 30, (THEWILL) – USA Gymnastics, on Saturday, announced that Shilese Jones, a top contender for the U.S. Olympic team, has withdrawn from the gymnastics trials. Jones sustained a left knee injury during a warmup vault on the first day of the competition, landing awkwardly and immediately exiting the floor.
Despite returning to complete her uneven bars routine, Jones scratched the remainder of the meet. Officials stated that she was undergoing evaluation, with a decision pending on her potential return. As the bronze medallist in the most recent World Championships, Jones was expected to join Simone Biles as an all-arounder in Paris for the 2024 Olympics.
This setback follows Jones’ withdrawal from the U.S. Championships earlier this month due to a shoulder injury. She had petitioned to compete at the Trials and was preparing for competition just 15 minutes before the meet was scheduled to begin when she injured her knee.
Jones’ absence is another significant loss for the talented U.S. team aiming for gold in Paris. Fellow strong contenders Kayla DiCello and Skye Blakely have also been ruled out of the competition after tearing their Achilles tendons this week. With these injuries, 13 women remain in contention for the five spots on the final night of trials on Sunday.
The string of injuries has dramatically altered the landscape of the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team selection process. As the trials conclude, the remaining gymnasts will face increased pressure to perform and secure their positions on the team bound for Paris.
