January 20, (THEWILL) – Manchester United are poised to make a shock appointment by naming Manchester City’s Omar Berrada as their new Chief Executive Officer. Berrada, who previously held the role of Chief Football Operations Officer at City Football Group, played an instrumental yet understated role in the club’s recent success.
However, Berrada has now resigned from his position at the Etihad Stadium, with City confirming his departure in a statement. They thanked Berrada for his contributions and wished him well for the future.
Berrada will now take up a senior position at Old Trafford, overseeing football and business operations at the club. His appointment comes after previous CEO Richard Arnold departed United in November 2022, coinciding with talks between the Glazer family and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS group regarding a 25% stake in the club.
The move for Berrada is believed to have been driven by Ratcliffe and INEOS, with the deal awaiting English Premier League approval. Berrada will join the United board and report directly to the club’s owners and new shareholders.
Initially, INEOS executive Jean-Claude Blanc had been touted for the CEO role at Old Trafford. However, Berrada’s extensive experience at City Football Group made him a more attractive option. He previously held roles with Barcelona as a senior business development manager and head of sponsorship.
