July 02, (THEWILL) – Veteran Nollywood actress, Joke Silva, has opened up on the challenges of taking care of her aged husband, Olu Jacobs.
The talented actress revealed in 2021, that her husband was suffering from dementia with lewy bodies, DLB.
Dementia with lewy bodies is a type of progressive dementia that leads to a decline in thinking, reasoning and independent function.
Speaking in the latest episode of the Nancy Isime Show, the actress stated that it has not been easy taking care of her husband of 37 years.
She added that the man she used to know is no longer there, but when he was there, he was a very caring father and amazing husband.
“We have been married for 37 years but have known each other for more than 42 years. We were dating five years before we got married.
“I have to be very honest, it hasn’t been easy. In the early years when it started, we didn’t realise it had started.
When he started behaving somehow, we were like,’ why are you behaving like this?’
“When the deterioration became more rapid, oh my darling, you wouldn’t want to see me at that time. I was always boiling, but there came a point of acceptance.
“It was like ‘this is it’. It is what it is and it was almost like the person you married is 80% not there.
“But when he was there, he was an amazing man. He is an incredible father to his children. He was an amazing husband, practically my best friend. I could share anything with him.
“In this journey now, it’s like am looking after my father, that’s the way it is”, she stated.
