July 07, (THEWILL) – US midfield star, Lindsey Horan and forward, Alex Morgan, have been named as captains for the upcoming Women’s World Cup set to kick off in two weeks.

The announcement comes in the wake of defender Becky Sauerbrunn’s unfortunate foot injury, which rules her out of the tournament in Australia and New Zealand. While Horan will wear the captain’s armband when both players are on the field, the duo will assume joint leadership responsibilities.

US head coach, Vlatko Andonovski, expressed confidence in their ability to lead the team, highlighting their extensive experience in high-stakes matches and their understanding of what it takes to achieve victory at the highest level.

With Horan and Morgan at the helm, the US team gains a formidable leadership duo as they aim for an unprecedented third consecutive Women’s World Cup title. Andonovski acknowledged the abundance of leaders within the team, including both seasoned veterans and promising young players. He was confident that Horan and Morgan, known for their professionalism and comprehensive grasp of the factors contributing to a united and motivated team, will excel not only on the field but also in representing the US off the pitch during the tournament.

The US squad is gearing up to kick off their World Cup campaign against Vietnam on July 22, followed by matches against the Netherlands and Portugal in Group E. The encounter with the Dutch side carries added significance as the US team emerged victorious over the Netherlands in the 2019 World Cup final.

The 34-year-old Morgan will be making her fourth World Cup appearance, having captained the team 22 times in the past. Meanwhile, 29-year-old Horan, participating in her second World Cup, has already led the team nine times.
